Branding for Studio Photographer; Carlo Mullen

Carlo Mullen is a studio photographer, who approached me with the challenge to rebrand him. The final outcome included letterhead, compliment slip, business card, price listing, poster template for Carlo to drop in his images, and an icon to appear on the iphone when his page is bookmarked. He asked for a logo that looks like a stamp using bold initial lettering, with which I also created a simpler version for watermarking images and when used very small when some text would otherwise not be visible. Included in the design I added a smooth zig-zig line used as an embelleshment across all mediums.

It has been ages since a website redesign, so I took down my website a couple of months ago so I could make the best portfolio for my work as possible.

The design; Inorder to create a great online platform for my work to sit - I wanted to create something really sharp but clean too (not boring) and I think I have achieved this - Going against my normal phobia of Serif typefaces and textures (don’t worry - there isn’t too much).

The coding; It’s a bitch, alright - But I have really enjoyed learning new techniques and I feel that my competency with coding is getting quite strong now with CSS3 and HTML. Just JQuery to get my noggin around now!

I will keep you updated for when it is launched, in the meantime, I will post a bit more often on Tumblr as I have been a bit distracted recently!

This is a logo for a handyman that I was approached to do.
He wanted a friendly, cheeky logo with an accompanying superhero-type character that would be used for an icon.

I used elements of the handyman to reflect in the character, from the slight curl to his grey hair to his friendly smile.

I am really pleased on the final outcome - Its very different to what I normally do but doing something so fun was a nice change.

They should be relaxing.... Yet I have done the washing up, eaten a cheeky bar of chocolate, for which I feel incredibly guilty, and am now back to work finishing this new logo. Ever have a break? When I am a famous graphic designer?... and even then no.

Adobe Muse - A Revolution to Web Design or a no more than DreamWeaver with Bells and Whistles?

We have long been waiting for an application / programme that will not only let us design the perfect website but also stop us from the miserable pathway if coding and do it for us as we go along. Dreamweaver was supposed to be the answer to our designing for web prayers but it turned out to be nothing more than any other coding programme. In fact I don’t even use it. Espresso coding software is amazing and far superior to any other coding based programme. It keeps your code tidy and breaks it up for you so finding parts of your code is easy.

Searching Adobe yesterday I came across Muse. The software that should change the way graphic designers approach web design, coding is done silently in the programme and leaves us to the most important part - design. I can imagine that it will only do basic coding and web app embedding and it won’t be able to do beautiful transitions and effects like the web trend of parallax style that is taking over currently - an example being the website eBay have set up to launch their new logo)…

… But it’s a start. If the programme can handle creating a site map that updates as you design and can put in light box slide shows and embed google maps then eventually I can foresee HTML5s more advanced coding being added to the programmes list of functions too. It even can upload your created site to a specific adobe server so your site can be live instantly - or if you want to link it to a different hosting platform you just save it out as a folder containing all your files neatly and ready to upload!

Currently Adobe Muse is a month by month subscription - which for the service which you are getting is pretty reasonable and not too expensive in my eyes - if you go for the annual subscription. Getting the rolling month subscription works out at an eye watering (from a graduates perspective) £22.75 a month but buying the annual subscription works out a nice £13.75 which I am very drawn too. Being a graphic designer who wants to go heavily into the web design industry I am having to sit and learn masses of code, and remember it. If I can get the core of the site designed without having to touch a line of code - brilliant! And then I can sort any Jquery and code later to enhance any parts of my site later.

Now I have halved my phone contract - this is the perfect opportunity for me to take out the subscription for a month - see how it works and then hopefully I can move onto the annual subscription and will let you all know how it works and if it as revolutionary in the web design market as I think.

Go on the Adobe site and read more into the software - and watch the introductory video and see if you are swayed by the software as I am!

The trend of the handwritten logo

Recently I have noticed a huge explosion of graphic designers creating logos that have a handwritten appearance. From sweeping calligraphic styles to chunky marker pen style markings there are some extremely beautiful and others which are completely uninspired. After trawling the internet I have come across many examples of these logos which do open yourself to the possibility that you might want to approach your next logo design in this style (if appropriate of course!)

Feast your eyes on these chimerical specimens of logos and start doodling your own contribution to the hand-rendered style logo world!

Review: Stanley Chow - Illustrator

After watching an illustrator in the office doing some work, she told me she got her influence for the style of her current work from an illustrator called Stanley Chow. After she showed me his work I was blown away. He creates beautifully simple computer created caricatures of celebrities and influential people around the world.

This is the style of illustration that I love and I hope to become this competant one day in the distant future!

Can you guess them?

His style varies from intense shading and detail on sharped edged illustrations to well executed line based pieces. He takes the most well-known physical attributes of his subject and eventuates it so the portraits are instantly recognisable, even if it just a square jaw that makes it obvious that it is Angelina Jolie.
